usDART

Five years after Katrina animals and their owners are still on their own when a disaster happens. The Red Cross will not shelter pets with their owners. Disaster responders are not trained to handle animals. Officials are not enforcing the PETS Act. It is time to do something about it: join DART!

Lamorinda DART (Disaster Animal Response Team)

Lamorinda DART is a group of experienced animal disaster responders. DART specializes in Animal Care and Sheltering during disasters. Our operational area includes the City of Lafayette, the Town of Moraga and the City of Orinda. Our emergency animal shelters are located near a shelter for people. Other partners are the Contra Costa County Animal Response Team (Contra Costa Animal Services), Noah's Wish, other DARTs in Contra Costa and the American Red Cross. Together, we rescue the whole family.

Haiti Veterinary Outreach Efforts in Progress PDF Print E-mail
Written by Frans Hoffman

While the national animal rescue groups seem to be unable to get people into Haiti to assist the many animal victims of the earthquake, some organizations that have been providing veterinary support are checking in. The Horse.Com has an article that discusses what is going on at the moment. Proceed with caution, animal rescuers and Animals-Are-Just-Food people do not always get along...
Overall, the impact on pets will probably be minimal: the people in Haiti are too poor to have pets. A friend of mine said: "I am glad there are groups doing assessments but as far as animals in need there ....... cats are eaten .....Dogs are very few ... and there are no pets . My husband has friends and has been there . there wont be a huge animal issue . They will need animals for food . i hate to see the animal groups exploit the disaster for money that could be used for people .." That is an opinion, not necessarily a fact. But I tend to believe my friends...
Please do not donate to any animal related cause that mentions Haiti unless you agree with their mission and practices and you know that they are actually on the ground in Haiti.
Disasters are usually goldmines for unscrupulous organizations that focus on "donor dollars".I have already received several emails  from (national) 'animal welfare' organizations asking for money, while one look at their web site tells you that they are currently not deploying. Most are just 'monitoring'.
My advice is to give for the humanitarian disaster, earmark it (write 'For Haiti') on your check and make sure that the organization you are giving money to is actually on the ground in Haiti.

Earthquake in Haiti: Preparing to respond PDF Print E-mail
Written by Frans Hoffman
The World Society for the Protection of Animals writes on its blog :
"My team and I have been closely monitoring the situation in Haiti since the devastating earthquake hit the capital, Port-au-Prince, last night. With most communications infrastructure down, it meant we had a long night waiting for information that beyond sketchy news reports.
Since this morning, we have been in talks with the United Nations (under serious stress themselves since their office in Port-au-Prince has collapsed, with 15 staff members dead and 20 still missing) and the local Red Cross Chapters to gain a further understanding of the impact on animals caught up in the situation.
