Lamorinda CERT

After a disaster Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda could be cut off for weeks. Lamorinda CERT teaches skills that help our communities survive a disaster. We have 400+ trained volunteers. Many of our members have taken advanced training with the American Red Cross and/or with Lamorinda DART, our animal rescue branch. Please join Lamorinda CERT!

Lamorinda DART (Disaster Animal Response Team)

Lamorinda DART is the animal rescue branch of Lamorinda CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). Our mission is to assist animals and their guardians during a disaster. We set up shelters and provide animal handling and search and rescue services to the 400 Lamorinda CERT/DART volunteers who are your first responders. We deploy sevaral times per year for local, regional or state animal emergencies to assist animals and their guardians. Our partners are the Contra Costa County Animal Response Team (Contra Costa Animal Services), Noah's Wish, other DARTs in Contra Costa and the American Red Cross. Together, we rescue the whole family.

DART Spreading Its Wings
The News - DART News
Written by Frans Hoffman

DART Spreads Its WingsClose to 20 DART members from Lamorinda, Walnut Creek and Shasta County returned home last night after attending another fabulous Noah’s Wish Training.
Noah’s Wish keeps getting better and better. We are truly blessed to have this organization as our back up.

After the training there was a short meeting of all existing DART groups (“The First Pan-Galactic DART Convention”). We worked on common issues, policies etc.  We have now all returned safely home with more knowledge and closer friendships.
The only sad thing was that Auburn, California, was too far for DARTs from South Carolina and Virginia to attend.

Animal Hell in Pahrump, Nevada - 2
The News - Latest News
Written by Frans Hoffman

Here are some of my notes and thoughts about what happened in Pahrump, Nevada, several years ago and what happened there a few weeks ago.

ImageFLOCK, 'For the Love Of Cats and Kittens', or Auschwitz, Nevada, as some call it - is not an exception. Extermination camps like these exist all over the country. An opportunity was missed to set an example. The Pahrump DA's office wasted time, humane organizations dropped the ball. The animals continute to suffer and die. History will repeat itself. Unfortunately.

Fire units raced to the scene on Camino Sobrante, where they found a garage full of thick black smoke. The family escaped outside after calling 911, then awaiting for the firefighters to arrive.

I saw animal hell in Pahrump Nevada
The News - Latest News
Written by Frans Hoffman
It has been more than two years since Nye County, Nevada animal control officer Tim McCarty took control of a facility in the town of Pahrump that many have described as an Auschwitz for cats.
McCarty was able to convince the owners of FLOCK (For the Love of Cats and Kittens) to surrender ownership and custody of the some 700 or more cats to the county which, in turn, placed the animals in the care of a rescue organization, Best Friends Animal Society. It was agreed FLOCK would lease the facility to the county to be cleaned up and the cats cared for on site until they were in better condition and could be placed for adoption.

Haiti Veterinary Outreach Efforts in Progress
Disaster News - Other
Written by Frans Hoffman

While the national animal rescue groups seem to be unable to get people into Haiti to assist the many animal victims of the earthquake, some organizations that have been providing veterinary support are checking in. The Horse.Com has an article that discusses what is going on at the moment. Proceed with caution, animal rescuers and Animals-Are-Just-Food people do not always get along...
Overall, the impact on pets will probably be minimal: the people in Haiti are too poor to have pets. A friend of mine said: "I am glad there are groups doing assessments but as far as animals in need there ....... cats are eaten .....Dogs are very few ... and there are no pets . My husband has friends and has been there . there wont be a huge animal issue . They will need animals for food . i hate to see the animal groups exploit the disaster for money that could be used for people .." That is an opinion, not necessarily a fact. But I tend to believe my friends...
Please do not donate to any animal related cause that mentions Haiti unless you agree with their mission and practices and you know that they are actually on the ground in Haiti.
Disasters are usually goldmines for unscrupulous organizations that focus on "donor dollars".I have already received several emails  from (national) 'animal welfare' organizations asking for money, while one look at their web site tells you that they are currently not deploying. Most are just 'monitoring'.
My advice is to give for the humanitarian disaster, earmark it (write 'For Haiti') on your check and make sure that the organization you are giving money to is actually on the ground in Haiti.

Currently, we are only seeking a small amount of money to pay for photocopiers etc.
However, in the long run we are looking for supplies to house 500+ animals. We are looking for collapsable wireframe cages, food and water bowls and blankets.
